How to Light a Dyna-Glo Heater

Lighting instructions vary by heater type. Jump to the section that matches your heater, or check our troubleshooting guide if your heater won't light.

Kerosene Convection Heaters

Models: WK24BK, WK24WH, WK95C8B, WK95C8C, WK11C8, RMC-95C6B

  1. Make sure the fuel tank has kerosene and the wick has soaked for at least 60 minutes (if new).
  2. Turn the wick adjuster knob to raise the wick to its full height.
  3. Press and hold the igniter button for 2-3 seconds. You should hear a click and see the wick catch fire.
  4. Wait 10-15 minutes for the heater to warm up, then adjust the wick height down slightly until the flame is a steady blue ring with small orange tips.
  5. If the electric igniter doesn't work, light manually with a long match through the lighting port on the side of the burner assembly.

Kerosene Radiant Heaters

Models: RMC-55R7, RMC-55R7B

  1. Ensure the tank is filled with 1-K kerosene and the wick has soaked.
  2. Raise the wick to full height using the adjuster knob.
  3. Press the igniter button. The wick should light within the glass globe.
  4. Adjust the wick so the flame is even and doesn't extend above the top of the glass globe.
  5. The glass globe will glow orange-red when the heater reaches operating temperature — this is normal radiant operation.

Propane & Natural Gas Wall Heaters

Blue flame (BF series) and Infrared (IR series) models

  1. Make sure the gas supply valve is open.
  2. Turn the control knob to the PILOT position.
  3. Push the control knob in and hold it. While holding, press the piezo igniter button repeatedly until the pilot flame appears behind the viewing window.
  4. Continue holding the knob in for 30 full seconds after the pilot lights — this heats the thermocouple.
  5. Release the knob. The pilot should stay lit. If it goes out, wait 5 minutes and repeat.
  6. Turn the knob to ON. For thermostatic models, adjust to your desired comfort level (1-5).

Tank Top Heaters

Models: TT15CDGP, TT30CDGP, TT360DG

  1. Attach the heater to a standard 20 lb propane tank. Hand-tighten the connection.
  2. Open the propane tank valve slowly (one full turn).
  3. Set the heater control to the lowest heat setting.
  4. Press and hold the control knob while pressing the piezo igniter. You should see the burner plate glow.
  5. Once lit, adjust to your desired heat setting. The ceramic plate will glow bright orange at higher settings.

Forced Air Heaters (Torpedo)

Kerosene models (KFA series) and Propane models (RMC-FA series)

  1. Place the heater on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. Keep the air inlet and outlet clear.
  2. For kerosene models: fill the fuel tank. For propane: connect the gas supply hose.
  3. Plug in the power cord (forced air heaters require electricity for the fan and igniter).
  4. Set the thermostat to the highest setting.
  5. Turn the power switch to ON. The fan will start and the electronic igniter will fire automatically.
  6. The heater should ignite within 15-30 seconds. Once running, adjust the thermostat to maintain your desired temperature.

  1. Connect the heater to a standard 20 lb propane tank using the included hose and regulator.
  2. Open the propane tank valve.
  3. Turn the control knob to PILOT and push in.
  4. Press the piezo igniter while holding the knob. The pilot should light behind the radiant panel.
  5. Hold the knob for 30 seconds, then release. Turn the knob to your desired heat level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Dyna-Glo kerosene heater light?
The most common causes are: (1) the wick needs replacing — if it's blackened or won't raise to full height, install a new wick; (2) the igniter batteries are dead — replace the AA or C batteries; (3) the wick hasn't soaked long enough — a new wick needs 60+ minutes to absorb fuel; (4) you're using old or contaminated kerosene — drain and refill with fresh 1-K grade.
How do I manually light a Dyna-Glo kerosene heater?
If the electric igniter isn't working, you can light the wick manually with a long fireplace match or a long-reach butane lighter. Raise the wick to full height, remove the chimney, and hold the flame to the exposed wick until it catches evenly around the full circumference. Replace the chimney and adjust the wick height for a clean blue flame.
How do I light a Dyna-Glo propane wall heater?
Turn the gas control knob to PILOT. Push and hold the knob in while pressing the piezo igniter button repeatedly until the pilot flame appears. Continue holding the knob for 30 seconds after the pilot lights to heat the thermocouple. Release the knob — if the pilot stays lit, turn the knob to ON and adjust to your desired heat level.
